Before you grow your own fruit trees, let us see what a fruit tree is. Simply put, it is a tree that bears fruit which can be consumed by people. All the trees that flower produce fruit. A fruit is a ripened ovary which is present in a flower and contains one or more seeds. The scientific study and cultivation of such fruits is called pomology. Pomology divides fruits into groups based upon the morphology of the plant and its anatomy. Some popular groups are the soft fruits of apples and pears, also called pome fruits and the stone fruits which consist of peaches, almonds, apricots, cherries and plums. We will have a look at where you can grow your fruit nursery. Most of the fruit trees like to be out in the sun. If these trees are exposed to frost or get attacked by insects, they will die. Pear and apple trees are the most vulnerable since they have flower blossoms. Citrus fruits comparatively are stronger but they need a lot of water. Do not plant fruit plants near the vegetable garden. They will benefit a lot if you do that but the vegetables will suffer. Vegetables and fruit plants both require a lot of water. But fruit plants encroach upon the other plants and use their resources too. They need lot of water especially when fruiting. So the vegetables will be deprived of their nutrients and will not grow well. Fruit trees should not be planted near root crops. This is because their roots will get disturbed when at harvest. Also many times it happens that the garden will be needed to dug up or sprayed with some pesticides that may not suit the tree. But if the garden is not a raised bed then you can grow a small fruit tree in some corner where it will not be disturbed. If you do not have enough space then plant fruit trees like espaliers, cordons and fans against the fence or the wall. They look decorative and do not take much space. If the fruit trees are the ones which prefer a warmer climate then make sure that you plant them near a wall whereby the wall will reflect heat back on them. If you have a fence which does not look good, then you can disguise it with the help of espaliers. Just take care that you cut off the branches that grow on the front or back of the trunk but not the ones on the side. But do it when the tree is growing not after it has matured. Planting the fruit trees in the lawn is also a good idea as they have pretty foliage, blossoms and fruits that can make the lawn look attractive. The trees will also provide good shade so that you can sit underneath it and the children can have a shaded area to play too. Growing berries is also a good idea. These berries can be grown on vines. Some berry vines are ramblers instead of climbers so make sure you have plenty of space if that is the case. You can even grow fruit bushes having berries which can be planted in the vegetable garden also. Grow your fruit trees right in your backyard and enjoy delicious fruits all year round.
